We are excited to celebrate the remarkable achievement of 2024 Byron High School graduate Bruce Gehrke, who will be awarded the prestigious Futures Farmer of America (FFA) American Degree. Bruce is one of only six Byron High School graduates to have ever been awarded this honor.
“This honor represents the highest level of accomplishment in the FFA Organization, and it is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and passion that Bruce has shown in his journey through agriculture education,” said Byron High School agriculture teacher Eric Tryggestad. “I couldn’t be prouder of Bruce.”
The FFA American Degree is a recognition given to only a select group of students each year, highlighting those who have not only excelled in their agricultural pursuits but have also made a lasting impact on their communities. The process to earn this degree includes meeting rigorous requirements, including completing a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, accumulating financial earnings and savings through agriculture-related projects, and demonstrating leadership through FFA activities and community involvement. Bruce’s SAE project was under the diversified livestock category, and it included cattle, swine, and poultry. In addition to that, he also did some work in forestry and with vegetables. Bruce will be honored and formally presented with his American Degree next October at the 2025 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bruce is no stranger to FFA awards. While he was still in high school, Bruce was also named a finalist for Illinois’ FFA Star Farmer Award, which seeks to recognize high school students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, agricultural knowledge, and a commitment to sustainable farming practices.
Congratulations, Bruce, on earning the FFA American Degree! We are proud of you!
