On May 3, the Byron Special Education Parent Advisory Committee met at 6pm in the District Office Conference room. Those in attendance included, Angela Grobe, Daryl Grobe, Julie Slick, Rhonda Hambley, Mark Burrows, Brenda Koeller, Kim Asher, Buster Barton, Carol Leininger, Janelle Smith and Hope DeVries.
Our first order of business was a Treasurer's report from Rhonda Hambley. We paid the invoice for the bags for $154.07. One deposit was made for $15.00, which is from leftover concession items from Resource Fair. Our current balance is $857.82.
Angela is still working on the non-profit status.
Kim Asher and Buster Barton presented to the group the results of the March 2010 Parent Survey from Special Education parents. 250 surveys were sent out and 48 were completed and sent back. The results were very positive, reaffirming the successful transition for the Special Education Program. We discussed ways to share this information with the Byron community. We agreed to create a letter for the community papers that shares the factual info from the survey. Angela & Daryl will work on the letter.
We discussed the service binder that we want to have completed for the August Back to School event. Everyone in attendance was asked to bring in resource information to include in the binder for our June 7th meeting. Angela & Daryl will go thru the information from the Resource Fair. We will need to figure out a format and way to present the information. It was suggested that we get in touch with Toni Rocha about her knowledge of community resources.
We are considering having a table/booth at ByronFest in the area of the car show near Sam's. We can sell Spirit cups. It was suggested to find items with car logos. Angela will check with Spirit cups. We will have a volunteer list for sign up at the June 7th meeting.
The Byron Park District swim night was very successful. Angela will talk to Cyndi Elsbury about getting info out to parents sooner and putting on Byron's website. It was suggested to advertise as Family Fun instead of Special Needs.
The update with the OCEC withdrawal is that both parties have agreed to go to mediation. The court will not rule on any motions until this process has had a chance to move forward.
Daryl brought up having a training seminar about IEP's for parents, to be conducted by Autism Solutions with Toni Rocha and her partner Corrina Millbrandt. Toni offered the training at ½ price. Carol wants us to consider having the school district handle the trainings at no cost. We will table this idea for the future.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30pm. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 7th at 6pm at the Byron Forest Preserve.
